Fact sheet
- Name
- Blast Phemur* in display, with the asterisk. Blast Phemur in running text.
- Say it
- Out loud, it sounds like “blasphemer”. The asterisk on the end is its own censor mark.
- What it is
- A free browser extension that mutes blasphemy and swearing as they are spoken on streaming video, and masks the same words in the captions, for example f***.
- How
- It finds the words in the show's own captions and lowers the volume for the moment each one is spoken. Timing comes from the captions, so it is close, not exact. It changes only the volume and the caption text: no scene is skipped or cut.
- Where
- YouTube TV (tested on real playback), YouTube and DIRECTV Stream (built for and checked against their caption formats). More services as each one is tested.
- Browsers
- Chrome, Brave and Edge on a computer. Chrome 116 or newer.
- Settings
- Blasphemy and Swearing, each Off, Worst, Most or All. New installs start at All for blasphemy and Most for swearing.
- False alarms
- “That was fine here” in the toolbar button, or the [ key on the player, passes that one moment. A prayer caught by the blasphemy filter is passed the same way. A sacred name is never allowed everywhere.
- Privacy
- No account, no analytics, no telemetry and no server of ours. Settings stay in the browser.
- Price
- Free. No paid version.
- Version
- 0.2.0
- Store

Words to use
Sounds like blasphemer. Mutes blasphemy and swearing.
Mutes blasphemy and swearing on streaming video and masks them in the captions. Free, no account, no tracking.
Blast Phemur* is a free browser extension for Chrome, Brave and Edge. It finds the words in a show's own captions and lowers the volume for the moment a word of blasphemy or swearing is spoken, and masks the same word in the captions. It works on YouTube TV, YouTube and DIRECTV Stream. Families choose how much to mute, from Off to All, and a false alarm is fixed for that one moment. There is no account and no analytics, and nothing goes to a server of ours.
Please do not describe it as a scene skipper, a parental lock, or as working on services other than these three.

The show in every picture is Sintel, the Blender Foundation's open film, used because a product that mutes swearing should not need a copyrighted one. The captions in it were written for these pictures.
Logos and images
The jar and the wordmark are drawn as paths, so the SVG files need no fonts. Keep the asterisk with the name, and give the jar room to breathe.
